RISE, Part One: “Dream of Light” (The Tempering) One small hand One small life Bend and fold the fire cold Tempering the knife One small whisper One small voice Amplify a truth denied Tempering the choice Rise to the occasion Flow into the dream A dream so fine This dream is yours, And mine One small face One small smile Seek and find a quiet mind Tempering the guile One small word One small sign Soul denies a callous cry Tempering the crime Rise to fires flowing Flow into the light A light so fine This light is yours And mine Sold out Said the puppet with the velvet eyes Silky skin He's a soldier But colder So hold on To the upside down as... You're receiving the spell they're weaving With a twinkle and a plastic smile Humble or proud the crowd you cling to Keeps on growing. Deceiving you Moving around the sound inside you Keeps on flowing. Forgive us this day as we trespass and try Safe in the fold or free to fly high Holding the pages of ages, the wages of sin. Deliver us not from the flame of desire The flowering story shall rise from the fire Penance denied, temptation begins. Lost in the dark here comes the spark Imagination. It's shifting you The world is changing rearranging Your creation. Life is young as life is old Life gives all that we unfold Every roll and every turn For life is living all we learn Light is given, light is seen Light is all and in between Deep the story of your star Light is never very far One small gaze One small blow Pretty things and glamour wings Tempering the show One small token One small fear Cast aside the wounded pride Tempering the tear Rise to the occasion Flow into the dream A dream so fine This dream is yours And mine One small question One small nerve Empathise with teary eyes Tempering the curve One small maybe One small chance Deep the well of mask and shell Tempering the dance Release the child growing Grow into the light A light so fine This light is yours And mine RISE, Part 2: “Trigger Finger” (The Spiraling) Be the one And be a stranger Trigger finger (trigger yourself) Trigger yourself (within) Free-fall begin (into the flow, now) So slow, now Open the skin (open the skin) Spiral and spin (spiral, release the spin) It's all within (so deep within) Ever the one (Trigger finger, trigger yourself) Ever the stranger (Free-fall begin, so slow, now) Open the skin (Open the skin) It's all within (Spiral and spin) Go deeper in Go deeper (It’s all within) Within Be the one And be a stranger

“Sign of the Times” (The Calling) The fear of falling comes ever closer When you are watching you A constant motion in every moment And everything you do A dilly dally of daily graces Faces we wear The day will come Whenever we see the one The day will come The rush and race of the poker faces Shoe shine and shuffle on Slippin’ and trippin’ on untied laces When you're already there. The day will come Whenever we see the one The day will come You feel it We feel it The day we see the one Holding a moment or lost forever Holding the hand of a fading treasure Moonlight dreams of a misty morning Bury the past and they all come calling The fear of failing comes ever closer When you're berating you Eradication a naked notion Afflicting all you do Hustle and bustle a daily shower The power of rain The day will come Whenever we see the one The day will come The rank and file denial bind-ed Footloose and wrecking ball Illusion asking the open mind Are you Abel or Cain? The day will come Whenever we see the one The day will come Will you leave me here? Will you? Leave me here? Polarizing faces, polarizing rhymes Back to back belligerence, poster boy chimes Intervention wordplay, intervention crimes Tropes evolving, so controlling Sign of the times Sign of the times Sign of the times
3.
“Born Afraid” (The Binding) Little Nightmare, little Sin Giving over, or giving in First of many, first or last Beware the future, beware the past Slow blade, lingers into the night Ebony fingers, ivory white Fading the host Lost to the never was Lost to the ghost Little Sandman, little Grimm Bind the dreamer, bind the skin Into the outside, outside in Slow burns the candle into the night Bohemian winters, beautifully bright Lighting the way Lost for a lifetime Lost for a day Do you ever wonder? (where you're going) Do you ever ask yourself? (are you still growing, everyday) Slow burns the candle into the night Bohemian winters, beautifully bright Lighting the way Lost for a lifetime Lost for a day Little shadow, little shade Softly spoken, softly played Beware the ending, beware the fade Slow blade lingers into the night Ebony fingers, ivory white Fading the host Lost to the never was Lost to the ghost Be the summer, feel the rain Be the winter, born again Be the question, feel the why Be the answer, born to try Be forgiven, feel betrayed Be the darkness, born afraid
4.
“Sailing Home” (The Following) In the land of reason, under the burning sun Every passing day, lays in the gaze of the infinite one Lost or alone - Follow me home In the land of plenty, minds go roaming free In the guise of a soldier holding a silicon sophistry Lost or alone ... Power in numbers, comes to understand The world as a symbol etched in lines on the palm of a hand Deeper attraction, still Hiding there Calls out to the tower power lies in a single stare Us and them, you and I Journey on, alone Sailors, sailing, home Walking with the brave as one Waiting for the wave to come Walking with the brave as one Waiting for the wave to come Gifted monkey, bending spoons Lost in the mesmerizing tide of a gibbous moon Beggar in a goldmine, gobsmacked in a sparkling haze Pretty lights of illusion muse to the call of halcyon days Radium temples, looking for a simple way Offering such confusion talking heads with nothing to say Us and them, you and I Journey on, alone Sailors, sailing, home Walking with the brave as one Waiting for the wave to come Walking with the brave as one Waiting for the wave to come Lost or alone Follow me home
5.
“Avalon” (The Knowing) Hunky Dory, casting a spell Into the quicksand, Hunky fell All the Queen's horses and all the King's men Couldn't put Hunky, together again... together again... together again... together again... Slow enough to linger, fast enough to fly Into the dark Into the night Holding the sky Far enough to wander, close enough to hide Into the sea Into the blue Holding the tide Time is flowing as a river over stone Shifting moments, shaping days In between the shimmer & the vast unknown Life will light the way Sing your song Avalon Old enough to feel it, young enough to run Into the rain Into the wind Holding the sun Time is flowing as a feather falls alone Slowly drifting as we play In between the shiver & the story shown Life will light the way Sing your song Avalon Life as a Fable old Shifting sand or sifting gold Only you can make it so When you know you know... You know.
6.
“Lifetimes” (The Remembering) Fragile Is sharing all that you don't show Hold on, don't let go Safer still Hiding In the arms of all you know Don't ever let go. Shoreline night-time lovers, left alone Staring slowly, into the great unknown Fingers linger, stretching the great divide Sure of the dark, nothing to hide. So many other lifetimes Remember, how could we ever know? That every story entwines Oh lover, forever make it so. When you feel alone And you can't, go on I am always near. Can you hear, songs we sing Every note and bell they ring Whispering Of summers gone and winters cold And yet our love is never old Remember, and hold me in your heart When the day is long And you can't, move on I am always near Do you hear, songs we sing Every note and bell they ring Whispering of home Hear me call and know me well The pearl of ever changing shell Of all the stories we would tell Dreams in which we rose and fell In thee the vision of the whole And ever rest the summers stole Walking in the past, no more For now we walk on summers shore We are home

about

Following their collaboration with Peter Hammill on In Amazonia (2019) and In Disequilibrium (2021), Sweden’s Isildurs Bane return with a new album, The Pearl of Ever Changing Shell.

This time the Swedish band is joined by singer Jinian Wilde, best known for his work in The David Cross Band. The result is another shift in direction while remaining true to the ethos that inspires and animates IB.

The album broadly deals with the notion of change. The changing world around us as well as the change that springs from within, one informing the other. Together they form something special and unique to each individual: the pearl of the ever-changing shell. Central to the album of course is the ensemble that brings life and timbral diversity to the compositions. Alongside Johansson’s keyboards, the core group consists of Klas Assarsson – marimba, vibraphone, percussion, Luca Calabrese – trumpet, Axel Croné – bass, woodwinds, Samuel Hällkvist – guitar, Jan Severinsson – sound engineer, Kjell Severinsson – drums and Liesbeth Lambrecht – violin/viola.

Isildurs Bane's collective prowess and formidable technique effortlessly encompasses rock, jazz and traditional folk forms, elements of electronica and pop across the album to stirring and dramatic effect.
